According to AR 670-1 regulations, soldiers must attach unit patches, rank insignia, and name tapes in a way that allows quick removal and replacement—without damaging the uniform. The unit patch typically goes on the left shoulder. In the U.S. Army, the present unit is worn on the left shoulder as part of the standard uniform. Meanwhile, the right shoulder is reserved for a unit with which the soldier participated in qualifying combat operations.
Unlike other branches, U.S. Army patches are unique in that all soldiers are required to wear unit patches as part of their official uniform. This distinction reinforces unit identity and reflects the soldier’s service history.
